The Diamond Museum Amsterdam is the only diamond museum in the Netherlands and the place for anyone with a love for diamonds, fine jewellery and the stories behind the world’s most desirable gemstones. You will find us on Museum Square, in a historic nineteenth-century building in the heart of the city.
While our permanent home is being renovated, we present an exclusive temporary exhibition that brings together four centuries of diamond history. In one visit you get to know the diamond as a natural wonder, as a craft and as a symbol of status, and you see why Amsterdam and this gemstone have been connected for so long.
Whether you collect jewellery, enjoy luxury or are simply curious about what makes a diamond so special, this is one of the most surprising things you can do in the museum quarter of Amsterdam.
OUr highlight exhibition
Unique objects and stories
Our temporary highlight exhibition tells the story of the diamond in a series of themes. It starts with the stone itself: how a diamond is created deep in the earth over billions of years, and why it is the hardest natural material we know. Next comes the work of the polisher, with the traditional tools and techniques that turn a rough stone into a brilliant, and the four C’s that determine its quality: carat, colour, clarity and cut.
We then look at the diamond trade and at Amsterdam itself, a city that has lived with diamonds for more than four hundred years and still carries that reputation today.
The final part is devoted to the diamonds everyone knows by name and to the jewellery of the House of Orange. Detailed replicas of legendary stones and royal crowns show how a diamond became a symbol of power, wealth and love.
PLANNING YOUR VISIT
What a visit looks like
A visit begins in the polishing factory, where a guide shows you how a rough stone is cut and polished by hand and answers the questions everyone has about diamonds. You then continue into the exhibition at your own pace, with all texts available in English through the QR codes in the rooms. Together this takes around 45 minutes, which makes it an easy stop between the larger museums on Museum Square. We are open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, and the highlight exhibition can be seen until 31 December 2027.
AMSTERDAM, CITY OF DIAMONDS
Four centuries of heritage
Amsterdam has worked with diamonds since the end of the sixteenth century, when refugees from the south brought the trade north with them. At its height the city was the centre of the diamond world, and in 1908 the largest diamond ever found was cut here. That world came to an end during the Second World War, when most of the city’s diamond workers were deported and never returned. The craft survived, and Amsterdam still carries the name City of Diamonds today.
